As Tomato Boy begins Bob McGregor cruises into Calvin County in an antique Buick Skylark convertible with his sometime girlfriend Janet Hood at his side. McGregor, a lawyer, plans to kickback in this Tennessee farmers’ paradise known for its delicious tomatoes. His goal is to write an historical novel while managing the financial affairs of the wealthy Roland Poteet, a former professor, friend and mentor. McGregor thinks he has settled into a lawyer’s heaven, free from the stresses of urban practice and free from entanglement in local affairs. But he soon learns that politics, potholes and an upcoming election are taken very seriously in Calvin County. First Poteet is threatened; then a prominent citizen is murdered. McGregor’s lawyer skills pull him into the action, and he negotiates his way through a labyrinth of small town relationships trying to solve one murder, prevent another, and, at the same time, work out his own relationship with Janet Hood and not let himself be diverted by the lusty temptations Calvin County offers.

Lawyer Bob McGregor, ensconced in his new home of Calvin County, Tennessee, saves the life of an elderly moonshiner. With that and McGregor finding lumpy envelopes of cash from an unknown source, the laid-back, work-a-day lifestyle he had created comes to an abrupt end. Following a tragic death, McGregor finds evidence of murder. At the behest of the local circuit judge, McGregor launches a frenetic search for the elusive killer. His romance with Janet Hood is at a standstill and he wants it back. However, the murder investigation entangles him in affairs of the ehart and body that he knows are steps in the wrong direction. Leslie Rion, owner of the Calvin House Hotel, receives a strong threat from a drug dealer. When two persons abduct Leslie, the tracking of the killer - and Leslie's abductors -sends McGregor sliding toward the precipice of death. Caught in the maze of Calvin County politics and small town relationships, McGregor must face a mix of suicide, more murder, gun-toting security guards, and a strung-out, pistol-wielding woman. He and Roland Poteet become embroiled in the turmoil of the Limbo family at the Tomato Emporium when Poker Limbo falls for the wily ways of a long-lost female cousin, who some say is a gold digger. To top it all, firebug No Toes Greene, a McGregor adversary from years before, is out of prison and asking around Manskar county honky-tonks for the location of his next kill, one Bob McGregor.
